Lieve Vanleeuw
Lieve joined the Economic Development in a Learning Province in April 2008 and was tasked with the challenge to manage the Learning Cape Festival from its planning and preparation stage right through to the monitoring and evaluation stage. Previously, Lieve worked as a project manager for the Arts Media Access Centre, coordinating projects like the 24-hour Stay-Awake Conclave and the development of the Graphic Novel ‘Ayhe!’ Lieve obtained her first Master degree in Philosophy in Belgium, her home country, but decided five years ago that the time had come to go places. After seeing parts of Asia, she landed in South Africa and finished a second Masters in International Relations and Conflict Management. She fell head over heels for this new democracy, decided to quite her job in Belgium and returned to South Africa to share her knowledge and skills where they were wanted and needed. Besides managing the Learning Cape Festival, she is involved in several other capacity building projects for youth that involve audio drama, graphic novels and even documentary filming. Working on the Festival however, has showed her that in order to move forward one must be willing to learn.

Some of her artistic products, like poetry, were performed in Mali for the African Renaissance Project in 2003. Occasionally she has performed her poetry at various prestigious events like the commemoration of Dallah Omar, the launch of the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA) programme and the 1000 learnership programme by the Department of Public Works.
“Working for a learning institution keeps me in touch with the reality that human beings are not born to suffer. They should learn, teach and discover something new daily so that they may grow and become greater life-long-learners. I do this simply because learning has contributed to who I am today,” Sindy says.
